The Music Continued, So Did the Celebration.
Two weeks later, we returned to Joshua Tree to take the cultural celebration deeper.
Culture gives us a way to meet each other beyond our differences. On September 12, 2026, Joshua Tree became a meeting place for Indian and American traditions yet again, bringing people together through dance, music, food, and shared celebration.
And because this celebration also honored the Marine Corps' 251st birthday, it felt right to include the people who carry that legacy every day, the military families of 'The Military Spouses Association of 29 Palms.'
The evening opened with Shakti Dance Academy, a premier Indian classical dance company, in full color and rhythm. Ten dancers moved together in grace and precision, bringing the stories and traditions of Indian classical dance to life. Leading them, as she has for forty years, was Viji Prakash, a guru whose own training runs generations deep and whose 2,000-plus students carry her teaching forward across the world.
The music then furthered the cultural conversation. Viji Prakash performed alongside six musicians from India and her son, Aditya Prakash, whose ensemble brought guitar, drums, trombone, and other contemporary sounds into the mix. What followed was a mesmerizing fusion of traditional and modern elements, shaped by the parampara tradition of passing knowledge and art from one generation to the next, that left the audience with a newfound appreciation for the rich cultural heritage being preserved and reimagined.
While the music carried on, the celebration continued around the table. Chef Kamaraj and his team of eight chefs prepared a full Southern Indian meal, bringing the flavors and traditions of the region into the evening. Guests ate together, exchanged words, and in between bites of delicious food, shared stories and laughter. Dr. Keerthy Sunder sat down with the artists for a conversation about heritage, family, and why nights like this one matter more than ever.
By the time the last note played, Joshua Tree felt like a room full of people connected by a shared experience of culture and community. Nights such as these, remind us what can happen when different cultures share a space, learn from one another, and celebrate together.
